Distance from Queenstown to Milford Sound

When planning your New Zealand holiday, it often can be very hard to decide upon the right mode of transport to get you to where you’re going. This is especially true when vacationing on the south island. Each mode of transport provides a different perspective and can make or break your holiday experience.

Queenstown the “adventure capital” of the New Zealand is a fantastic location to base your setup based camp. Which will enable you to reach most of the popular tourist destinations with ease. One in particular that stands to mind is venturing from Queenstown to Milford Sound.

Milford Sound is one of the most spectacular places on the south island of New Zealand. It granger is second to none and I can honestly say the I am so lucky to of experienced its beauty first hand. If you don’t do anything on your New Zealand holiday, do this. Milford Sound begins its journey from Dale Point and stretches inland 15 kilometres from the Tasman Sea. The sound is surrounded by huge rock faces that rise 1,200 (3,900 ft) metres into the sky. The highest peak the fiord is Mitre Peak which rises above the skyline at 1,692 metres.

There are many different modes of transport you can chose from to reach Milford Sound. You can rent a car, take a bus tour or fly. Scenic flights are a must in the right weather, especially if you can afford to splurge. Milford Sound has its own airport which caters mainly to the tourist industry. The airport is situated in the heart of town, close to the tourist marina and lodge.

The distance from Queenstown to Milford Sound by car is 290 kilometres or 180 miles. 290 Kilometres may not sound like much but you’ll be drive over some of the most spectacular scenery the south island has to offer. And because of that the drive will take about four to five hours traversing over and through the mountain sides. That’s right through the mountain side. To reach Milford Sound a vehicle must pass through the Homer Tunnel which was built and opened in 1954. The tunnel itself links Milford Sound to Te Anau. The tunnel runs for approximately 1270 meters which is quite amazing.

There are many attractions to see and do when visiting Milford Sound. The Sound has an abundance of wild life from fur seals, crested penguins, dolphins that will lighten up anyones today and make for great photo opportunities. Along with taking one of many cruises on the sound, you can choose to also kayak. There are many hiking tracks to select from as well. But for those of you that would just like to sit back an enjoy the beauty try a scenic flight.
