Travel Insurance
What should my travel insurance cover
- Medical and health cover for injury or sudden illness whilst traveling abroad.
- 24 hour emergency service and assistance.
- Personal liability cover in case you are sued for causing injury or property damage.
- Cover for lost or stolen possessions.
- Do not rely on compensation from an airline if they loose your baggage. By law they have to pay a specified minimum value per kilo and its unlikely to cover the full value of your luggage.
- Cancellation or curtailment of your trip.
- Extra cover for activities that you plan to undertake which are not generally covered by travel insurance, such as jet skiing.
Your policy should cover you for the whole time you are away.
Your policy may also have;
- Personal accident cover.
- Legal Expenses cover.
- Financial protection if for example your tour operator goes bankrupt.
Exclusions - What is often not covered by travel insurance
You should always check the conditions and exclusions in any policy.
- Most policies do not cover incidents that are drink or drug related.
- You must take reasonable care of your possessions or they will not be covered by the policy.
Tips when buying travel insurance
- Shop around to find the right cover at the best price - rather than opting to travel without insurance.
- Cheaper prices generally mean less cover - is any trade-off in cover worth the initial savings?
- Consider annual multi trip insurance if you make several trips a year there could be some good savings.
Canceling your trip or cutting is short
A good insurance policy will cover you if you have to cancel you trip or cut it short. Make sure you know what you are covered for.
- Accident
- Illness
- Pregnancy (unknown to you when you purchased the policy)
- Jury service or witness summons
- Home emergency - fire, storm, flood etc.
- Redundancy
- Strikes
- Bad weather - affecting departures etc.
Make sure your travel insurance policy will
- Refund the full cost of your holiday.
- Pay out if you need to cancel or cut short a trip if you fall ill for example.
- Cover prepaid expenses such as excursions.
- Covers extra costs to get home.
